If you see tall stocks with wierd shoots with little yellow flowers watch out.
The sap burns the skin pretty good.
I think I got nabbed in the schnarb of 5 to the left of the mound and short when looking for ken's Ape on Monday. I definitely remember seeing one in this location anyways.
I could also have been one of the 12 times I was in the rough on Tuesday. I hope none of my card mates who helped me search got burned either.
Thumber got some nasties from this earlier in the year too I think.
If you see this plant, stay clear.

There is lots of poison parsnip here and at Ettyville. I try and keep it cut and it burns my ankles from time to time.
It is NOT dangerous at all unless you break the stocks and get the oil on you.
Next time you see Dolliver ask him about how he proved he was "immune" to it. Great story |

I was moving schnarb to look for a disc. I must have broke the stalk in the process. |

Watch out is not the right thing to tell people.
It's wash it off/rinse it if you feel you got it on you.
This stuff doesn't itch or do anything so don't confuse it with nettles or that.
What causes the burn is UV. The sap turns very acidic (I believe) when exposed to UV. You can roll in this stuff at night. The burn will blister and take a while to heal and is actually painless. So if you itch and or have swelling or some pain with it you probably have a sensitivity to something else.
I itched for 2 days and 2 showers after the round Monday night looking for Don's discs. No parsnip burns at all.
When Cam and I got burnt we were using the trimmers in it for hours in the sun and had the stuff all over us so it's not so easy to get it on you and get a burn but alas Cam and I trimmed 5 and 6 greens on Saturday morning as that's where the stuff grows and people come into contact with it. Maybe you got it there in what was on the ground?
I almost prefer this to whatever was making me itchy for 2 days. lol |

It could also very well be a sensitivity issue.
I have been to EV 13 times this season, always in shorts,
frequently in the schnarb, and I use my legs to move around
the long grass/plants when I'm looking for discs.
Aside from scratches from thorns, canes or roses, and brief
irritation from nettles, I haven't had any problems with the
parsnip.
When I do encounter the parsnip plants, I usually step on the stem
right near ground level to flatten the plant down to the ground. |
